MPLS Network – Is it secure?

MPLS (Multiprotocol label switching) is a data transportation technique and nothing more.

In the older traditional transportation technique, routers transmit data after analyzing the IP details in the header portion of the data packet. The disadvantage of such a transmission is that each time a packet is received by the router, it has to do some thinking before routing it to the next hop before sending it to the final destination. Whereas MPLS technology is used for speeding up network traffic flow by setting up a specific path for a given sequence of packets identified by the label marked on each packet. This saves the time needed for a router to look up the address to the next node to forward the packet to.

Based on the above, it can be understood that MPLS is a faster way of transmitting data. But it does not mean that it is a more secure way of data transmission. ‘MPLS is a secure network’ is a myth. Therefore one should consider implementing additional security measures like MPLS VPN while establishing MPLS network if one wants to have a secure information network.
