Dradis – A tool for sharing pen test reports

Among the myriad of challenges that penetration testers/ ethical hackers / auditors face today , effecient sharing of information about the vulnerability scans and exploits that have been identified presents itself as the greatest challenge.  A tool to overcome this challenge will be a boon to pen testers.

Traditional pentesting teams face different types of challenges regarding information sharing. Different tools provide output in different formats, different testers capture evidence in different ways, different companies report differently, etc.If you do not use a tool to share the information, every tester will use their own notes file to keep track of their findings. Each will store this file locally, or on a shared resource, but the information will not arrive inmediately to the rest of the team.

If you want to know what are the latest findings of your mate, you will need to look for the notes file. You also can try talking, but talking is not that effective when you need to know a speciffic cookie value or a sql query for an injection attack.

It seems reasonable that some effort must be put to increase the quality and efficiency of this process. Dradis addresses this challenge. Dradis  is an open source framework to enable effective information sharing during penetration testing exercises. It provides a centralized repository of information to keep track of what has been done so far, and what is still ahead. Dradis is thus an ideal tool to help in the process of security assesments.

Reports from various tools such as Qualys/Nessus Professional Feed can be integrated with Dradis and the information about the pen tests are available real time in a structured way.  Dradis is very simple to install, maintain and use. Overall Dradis provides the following advantages:

  1. Information is organized at a single location available for use anytime.
  2. It saves time, both while testing and while reporting
  3. The knowledge is effectively shared among various security people.
